Job Description

This Opportunity WSP is currently seeking an Early Career Geologist to join our team in Portland, Maine.

For this position we expect to train the successful applicant in appropriate field methods and procedures. Prior experience or training is not required although related experience is desirable. WSP will also provide required OSHA health and safety training prior to field work. That person will gain experience in writing work plans, analyzing and evaluating environmental data and assisting with report preparation for submittal to our clients and regulatory agencies. Your Impact • Oversee soil borings and groundwater monitoring well installations, collect soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, air, and soil gas samples, collect data in complex field situations with supervision, and document field activities. • Perform other field exploration, inspection, testing, and analyses using equipment and instrumentation. • Prepare components of site investigation reports including work plans, data summaries, calculations, tables, figures, charts, drawings and report text. • Collect samples and data during remedies and pilot studies from soil and groundwater remediation systems. • Assist Project Managers and project teams, ensuring effective client communication and relations. • Organize field work, assign tasks, and work with other staff specialists and technicians to complete assignments. • Follow company safety policies and procedures, site safety standards, and permit requirements. Who You Are Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science or closely related discipline. • 0-1 years of relevant work experience. • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset. • Familiarity with the concepts of reducing and eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances, processes, or products. • Familiarity with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements. • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience. • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment. • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives. • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools. • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies. • Capable of standing or walking for prolonged periods, whether stationary or in motion. • Field duties may involve working in adverse weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold. • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek. • Must possess a valid driver’s license, have reliable personal transportation, and be able to travel based on project‑specific requirements.
